Many of you know that last November we were saddened by the passing of Dave Whitlock. One of the first books I acquired back in the 1980s was “Dave Whitlock’s Guide to Aquatic Trout Foods”. This is an amazing book and I think should be required reading for all fly fishers. A newer version of the same topic came out in 2010 by Skyhorse Publishing called, “Trout and their food” In the preface to the 1982 book, Dave tells of his conversation with Lew Jewett (of 3M’s Scientific Anglers) who challenged him to develop a slide show on aquatic insects. Over the years this inspired Dave to learn more about trout foods. An Upper Midwest early connection to one of the great fly tiers and artists. Over the years Dave created some unique and very effective fly patterns. One of his that I have tied is the Red Fox Squirrel Hair Nymph. Give this pattern a try at the vise and fish it this year. All of his patterns are easily found online and you tube. Larry Olson
